Trimming Poly Bushes
Now this is a little bodgetastic so look away now if that's going to upset you......
Sunday afternoon...... no lathe and you need to trim the shoulder of a few poly suspension bushes so the crush tube stands proud of the
bush.........It turns out that if you have crush tubes with an ID of 1/2" and you take a grinding stone off your Clarke bench grinder the shaft
it mounts on just happens to have an OD of 1/2"......... If you slide the poly bush onto the crush tube and then slide that assembly onto the
shaft of the bench grinder, put the bolt on the end of the shaft then hey presto you are able to spin the bush at roughly the correct speed required
to machine polyurethane Then, and this is the slightly bodgy bit!, if you take one of the stanley type knifes with the slide out blades and slide
the blade out a couple of inches you have a cut off tool.....
I have to admit it's a fairly anxious moment the first bush you try it on(!!!) and you have to take care to hold the blade vertical. Obviously
it's not lathe accurate but by the 3rd bush when you've got the hang of it it's quite accurate enough and the surface finish of the
cut is actually better than some bushes I've seem machined on a lathe!
I take no responsibility for you destroying your bushes if you try it btw but if you are stuck it might be worth a go!

As a dedicated follower of all things bodgey, I give your approach 2 Thumbs Up!
Anything that 'works' is good enough for me!

Isn't that a snap off blade? Brave man if so!!! Giving yourself DIY cataract surgery with a flying stanley blade would probably sting.....
Good bodge though (personally I would have used a file even if it took a little longer)....

What use is a bodge if it doesn't involve a bit of danger lol - that was a bit of a concern tbh so I was pretty well wrapped up (glasses,
goggles and a clear flip down visor) just in case! but it was the only 'suitable' blade I could find in the garage at the time.
I suspect using a file would just melt the bush....

Good sharp chisel would might also work well.

ive just trimmed my bushes but i did it with a power sander, nice and easy and it works so well if you stick to a grade of grit begining with 1
