I had a grinder with variable speed which I used on the lowest setting for polishing/ buffing paintwork with no problems

Ive used a simular item as in the OP to fitt a buffing mop to a bench grider for cleaning up brass. But i would agree that for polishing paint, unless its a decent variable speed job, an angle grinder would be to fast.

Often though about using a orbital sander....

Depends on what you plan to polish. No good for paintwork, but if you are polishing metal then it would be OK

A dual action sander is a good alternative. You can get them cheap from Aldi sometimes then buy a head like this for it.

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.
