Laptop Welder
Spent today upgrading my SIP welder with a laptop power supply to feed the electronics as reccommended in this and other forums.
Cost £13.95 and didn't work!
Much head scratching and it appears the printed circuit board although apparantly identical to the photo's on the welding site had the polarity
reversed. Thats that buggered then!
More head scratching and the motor speed still works alright its just the power side thats knackered so two power relays from Maplins later (£16) and
some frantic wiring and its all up and running.
With a stabilised power supply to the electronics and wire feed motor I was looking forward to a luxury welding experience to transport me to welders
heaven. I should mention that I dilligently carried out the other mods to the drive wheels etc at the same time.
Result? Bit like a wet fart really.
Better done but was it really worth it? Yea it sizzles like bacon in a frying pan but it did that before - it was just the annoyance when it stopped
doing it at the most vital moment. It worked OK for 30 min welding which is better than before I suppose.
Still think I'd have been better off buying a decent welder in the first place - anyone know where I can get a cheap chinese TIG.........

I have a Rehman Tig (DC only) and its good. not used it a huge amount, but works well every time I have used it.
Only downside is the Gas.
I am considering going to Adams Gas in Kent (100 miles drive each way).
The buying TWO bottles (So I dont run out!), and ditching my rented bottles.
I dont weld enough to warrant the £80 per year rental.
Stilll cant fault the Rehman, it was a good buy off Ebay and arrived from Germany on just a few days.
1. The point of a journey is not to arrive.
2. Never take life seriously. Nobody gets out alive anyway.
Best Regards
Geoff
