has anyone converted a hobby mig to a euro torch?
I'm tempted to buy the following two bits of kit and convert my hobby torch to a euro torch.
http://www.welduk.com/Details.asp?ProductID=290
http://www.welduk.com/Details.asp?ProductID=392
The advantage being I could run a longer standard torch meaning things would be a lot easier in the garage. The secondary advantage and the real
reason is i could use a spool torch. I could therefore have a go at aluminium welding and brazing (on ebay they've had brazing wire for 20
quid).
Has anyone done this? Did it work?
Does anyone think this is worth it?
Can anyone see any problems doing this?

I did this to my Clarke 150 as the old torch was falling to bits. It's a slightly tricky conversion (or was in my case) as you have to get the
euro socket to line up with the wire feed assembly exactly. It works well, but I do miss being able to pull the trigger slightly to check gas flow
without actually spooling any wire out as you can with the hobby torches. You can add a button to the welder to do this though. The other aspect is
that even the smallest Euro torch is a bit larger than a hobby torch, so makes getting into the really tight spaces a bit more difficult.
The best mod I made to this welder was putting a super heavy duty (300 amp IIRC!) earth cable on it with a massive and very strong earth clamp. That
by itself greatly improved the weld quality and the maximum current it will supply; it will now blow the 13 amp fuse in the plug on max power if you
get a short between the tip and earth, wouldn't do that before with the feeble bit of wire supplied with it. I installed a Dinze socket so I
can unplug the earth cable.
The next best mod was replacing all the poxy self tappers holding it together with rivnuts and stainless machine screws, the whole chassis is way more
rigid now.
Also fitted some proper rubber tyred wheels from Machine Mart to replace the cheap and nasty plastic ones. It makes lugging it around much nicer if
you don't have nice smooth floors.
