How much does a Zetec weigh/and advice on lifting one
I am looking to build a frame inside our gararge that I can use to lift a Zetec engine into my budget Westfield.
The garage is a typical modern/integral garage.
Wifes Puma only just fitted in, MK2 escort would fit, but I had to take 4Cibies off the front to get the door closed!
I am looking to fit a Zetec engine into my Westie and have only this space to do the job. There is no room to use an engine crane ( I have one with a
1ton(imperial) capacity, but it will fill the garage. The drive slopes in 2 directions, so would require lots of chocking and time. I have plenty of
time at the moment, but if anything heavy is left out over-night, the local pikeys(*,) seem to have the right to claim ownership.
So, the question is; how much does a Zetec weigh, and what size steels work would you guys suggest I build inside the garage to lift one?
The garage has a concrete floor and both walls are of dense breeze block construction (i.e., not thermalite or such).
I am looking at bolting an upright piece of angle iron to each wall, and then one across the ceiling to conect each upright. I would add a 45degree
brace at each upper corner and also maybe add a couple of horizontal braces if required.
I was thinking of using 50mm x 50mm x 9mm angle iron.
Does anyone think this would be adequate?
A coleague has just pointed out that we may have some free/scrap lenghts of 'Unistrut' laid about. However I do know that this stuff does
heave swl's specced along its lenght, i.e. unifrmally distributed!
To use this I need to know what weight I may have to hang of it, therefore the need to ask how much a Zetec weighs!
Sorry for rambling !

(*, pikeys; this is no longer an acceptable means of identification)!
Advise using;
'C'-aravan,
'U'-tilising,
'N'-omadic'
'T'-raveller' 'S'
'S'ic !

I wouldn't personally use angle iron, it's not well suited for use as a long beam. Use box or tube
I have lifted a Zetec E (2.0L) in and out of a Transit and with two people it was very easy. With no manifolds, alternator, steering pump etc. fitted
I'd think no more than 120kg.

Ive picked one up of a bench walked 5 meters and put it on another bench to clean it Around 120kg.
A bit of 2x4 steel box with a plate on each end and four bolts into the wall would do it.
There is a 32mm bar spans my garage it does bow with a zetec on it.

I tried to lift my xflow of a bench to put it on the floor, got halfway and discovered a pointy bit had snagged on my T-shirt, then decided there was
no way I could lift it back onto bench so carried on lowering it and ripping my T-shirt off in the process!

when fitting my cvh engine in a limited space garage i done it the other way and jacked up the front of the car, slid the engine underneath, stood it
up and then jacked the engine up on chocks.

If you've got the engine mounts for the zetec, you can remove an engine and fit the zetec in a day.
Push the car out, get the zetec into the garage, attach it to your crane, push the car half in / half out of the garage. Fit the engine. take the
crane apart, push the car in.
Surprised you can't get the car and crane in the garage at the same itme. I can in my single garage but i can't rotate the crane (due to
having a bench and other stuff at the back).
The other option as suggested is lift the car over the engine &box (which is resting on 4 inches of wood / some bricks). without a radiator,
gearbox, front wheels it should be quite easy.
