Any tips for bending small(ish) dimater tubing?

I want to build a luggage rack for my bike (Benelli Tornado Tre) as nothing is available commercially. Most commercial racks are made from mild steel tubing, about 16mm in diameter which I'd like to stick with as I have no facilities for welding alloy etc.

Are there any DIY methods of bending this without an expensive mandrel bender? I'm not overly bothered about a super lightweight job so I could use e.g. 2mm wall to lessen the chances of it kinking.

I've heard filling the tube with sand and sealing the ends before bending will help stop it kinking

As above

I used my trusty copper tube bender for 22mm x 1mm tubing with great success, as the mandrels are decent fit no kinks.

That's a great idea, I hadn't thought about using a plumbing bender. Looks like you can get 15mm OD CDS tube reasonably cheaply for the lengths I need, so this would be perfect. Thanks guys.

Superb job on the luggage and bike racks!

You'll struggle bending CDS with a plumbers type tube bender. I've used mine with ERW round tube and it works fine.
