Re-tempering spring steel
The foot-brake lever return spring on the bike needed shortening then re-tempering.
First part is easy - heat to cherry red with a blow-lamp, cut whilst hot, reform then plunge into warm oil.
Had never needed to re-temper spring steel but this youtube shows how easy it is.
Basically once formed re-heat to stage two blue then allow to cool naturally - simples.
Thought others might like to know that....

Handy to know.
There's a small factory local to me that makes springs. I have often bought the source wire from
them which is fairly easily formed into springs but when roasted in the oven at 200c tempers into
proper springs.
