I think this is the right place ~ Bolt suppliers?
Evening all,
I am trying to locate a source of grade 10.9 metric bolts, and Nyloc nuts. I've enquired at a fe local places, but because I only want 4-10 of
each, I was given a stupid price. Does anyone know a cheapish, but good quality supplier that can send them to me, or I can order online or
something?
I'm after 8 off M10x25mm grade 10.9
4 off M8x20mm grade 10.9
2 off M12x60mm grade 10.9 (with Nylocs)
4 off M10x35mm grade 10.9 (with nylocs)
And that is about it (for now).

RS components do nuts, bolts etc. orders placed online. Not sure how thier prices compare.

You'll find it a lot easier to get grade 8.8's and if they are for a locost then you don't need 10.9's anyway.

try looking for bolts or fasterner suppliers in the yellow pages.
Found a couple of excellent ones around coventry that way.

i second namrick. watch out for the post/packing, worthwhile putting in a big order to make the most of it

ps screwfix do some bolts, but limited range, i got some small metric cap heads quite reasonably though..

If you use SHCS you will find they will be grade 12.9 (or whatever it is).
Unwise to use stainless bolts for anything critical like suspension/brakes etc as the tensile strength is crap compared to even standard 8.8 steel
bolts. They make look nice, and tempting, but do NOT use them for critical applications!

Thread lengths vary over the size ranges but are generally 3/4" to 1".

Stick with 8.8 they are more than adequate.
If you really need 10.9 or 12.9 it is generally easier to get them as cap screws.

Thanks for the leads chaps.
I did wonder about replacing the 10.9 grade bolts with 8.8, but I'm a little uneasy about that. The M12x60 and M10x25 ones are to bolt the
brake calipers (ford) to the uprights. Mr Ford specced 10.9 bolts, so there would have to be a good reason for that. It seems they are silly money
from Ford too.
Maybe you have to pay silly money for decent bolts?!
Anyway, I've found a place that can get Cap head screws in grade 12.9, but are there any significant advantages/disadvantages to cap heads over
hex heads?

Once rusted - capheads are generally more difficult to shift due to rusting of the internal hexagon.
Another place to find bolts is VWP postage isn't too bad and I have found them excellent
everytime I have dealt with them.

mst bolts are suppleid bzp (bright zinc plated) so don't tend to go rusty, at least not for quite a while. def. don't buy the standard
black bolts as they go rusty very quickly and can then be a pain.

I'm pretty sure that all cap screws are rated at 10.9 or higher so use them for caliper mountings if possible. The only disadvantage is that the
heads are smaller when compared to a standard bolt so it is often a good idea to put a washer under them if you can.
I agree that you shouldn't use the black or unplated ones - they rust in no time. Go for zinc plated and apply a little copper grease when you
fit them.
