New kit arriving - tools required ??

Hi all - I'm new to this site and I've got an MK Indy kit arriving next week, was just wondering what kind of tools will be required - I've got the usual basic car maintenance stuff but have heard that I need rivet guns, brake pipe benders and flarers etc... Has anyone got a list of what is needed (and where to get it from!!)

Ta very much

Paul

get a good rivet gun,you got plenty to pop, brake pipes can be made up by any garage or parts supplier, meaure the lengths with 3 core cable and add a few inches to get it right, the rest is pretty easy

first of all welcome to the madhouse!

If you can afford a decent compressor...it will be a very handy thing...but the smaller ones (about £70) aren't good enough for air drills etc..

A riveting tool is essential for doing your floor...at the very least get a 'lazy tongs' (scissor style) riveter - get it off ebay or from sunday market maybe, or even a kitcar show - newark is soon...
or if you get a compressor, an air riveter is fantastic.

I used a hand riveter to do my floor and all my other rivets, hurt like hell but it is possible!

Have you got "The Book" by Ron Champion ?

Although your not building a locost, it still provides loads of info on what's required and pointers for how to put things together.

One tool that stumped me for a while was a 41mm socket for the Sierra rear hub nuts. In the end a local garage lent me one on the understanding they would all get a ride in the car when it's finished - that was 2 years ago and they are still waiting patiently

Good luck and keep the questions coming

Nick

If there's one tool that I've found invaluable during my build it's my trusty angle grinder.......makes sparks too which is kinda cool!..... I think I got mine for £17 from B&Q and it's been the best money I've ever spent.

Cheers for the info fellas. I've got the Ron Champion book and thats give me a good idea of what I'm letting myself in for! Going to be building on a budget (arent we all!) so I think I'll try to get hold of a hand riveter and see how I get on with that. colibriman, how much can you get R1 engines for - I'll be needing one of those in a few months... ;o)

Socket set, combination spanners, grips, drill, riveter and nutsert setter. Get them as you need them and it won't be such a shock to the wallet.

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

I broke 2 smaller hand riveters, You'll get serious arm ache if you use one of those...I think I paid about £15 for the lazy tongs riveter...MUCH easier than a smaller hand one..

carbed R1's are normally about £1000 complete with all running gear.... give me a shout nearer the time. Thanks for asking.

cheers
Colin

My 2penneth would be....
Get lazy tong not long arm rivet gun and a hand one too.
If you need a angle grinder for an indy you're doing something wrong.
You should'nt need a compressor nice but...
Don't buy a cheap pipe flare tool, get someone to lend you a good one,. but a cheep bender is fine
Buy a cheap multimeter with a beep.
Buy a set of uninsulatedcrimping pliers.

A nibbler is a fantastic tool for cutting ally or even steel sheet - about £50 but worth it's weight in alloy!

A Cleko tool for positioning your floor panels prior to rivetting - absolutely essential.

An electric pop rivetter - saves a lot of blisters.

A Black & Decker Power File - essential for crafting fibreglass
