Worksafe Avitars
ooops, I managed to get blank lines between the options. Can't edit the poll questions iether.
I know its "boring old fart" mode but some of our employers have sacked people for less and I do like (and am permitted) to use the web
during work hour and don't have the same "free time" when at home.
Not sure if a poll has been done before couldn't find one.
It has been mentioned in a post recently
recnet linky
and an older link
Older Linky
some avitars a not worksafe in the current harrassment and bullying age we live in.
Can we have a poll on what we should have as an acceptable avitar?

for work (financial) reasons I don't want anything that could be challenged by my employer.
this is a car site so I would prefer car avitars anyway, if I want porn I could do a google and find loads.
"old fart" maybe but quite like keeping my job and still browse during the day while at work.

I'm in 101% agreement with this.
I have the same agreement at work.
I have allready been pulled for this. Fortunately not by anyone who was going to do anything about it.
In the organisation I work I could be sacked. I know it's madness but thats the way it is and I would really like to keep my job just a little
longer.

It has been covered before with no self policing or change. My children often like to see what I'm doing on the net - and as I'm often on
LB just browsing I occasionally have to skip past a few of the more fruity ones - which I do object to.
It's a shame that some of us who frequent LB in their place of work will either loose their jobs or LB will be on the list of BARRED websites
due to political incorrectness.
I personally don't have a problem with it as it's all harmless fun - but I do resent my children being subject to it.

What's acceptable in one place of work, wouldnt be in another. Where I work in the summer they would have no objections to my avatars, but they
would to someones like weldermans for instance....

Yep - totally agree. But there is a way around it. If you're using Firefox, you can install the AdBlocker and you can either :
- block individual Avatars (from memory there are only 2 or 3 regulars who have them)
- block all images from the site
- block all images coming from the /upload folder on this site.

As a point of interest what are we proposing to do should the poll reveal that these avatars are unwanted?
Self policeing has been tried before, and whilst in the main it works there are some on here that simply ignore it.
I could probably succesfully argue at work that bikini clad was not offensive but I would seriously struggle with avatars like the one used by
Welderman.
Please can we ALL take responsibility for this this time?
It's not a case of being a "boring old fart"
It's a case of "respecting each other"

Could you try to persuade my employers to switch to Firefox please?
Although this is good information it is actually irellavant as most companies still use IE.

At my work I would get pulled up (probably not sacked) even for your image should I get caught with it on my screen, even though it is a simple album
cover.
All employers should be using the same guidelines for what is acceptable but I guess it also depends on what sort of complaints (and unfair dismisal
court cases) they have from employees as to what they enforce.
We have 1500 employees in our site and 25000 worldwide so I ss they are just trying to keep everyone happy and not display something that may offend
anyone.
We have had numerous sacking for abuse of work computers for even downloading software or music and obviously xxx pictures.
I have no issue with these sort of thing at home (my wife would have though)

I've commented before and will do so again.
PLEASE STOP USING NON WORK SAFE AVATARS!
I love using this site, I love the community on here but I HATE the fact that the minority cause me to risk getting an official warning when i'm
at work.
One of the ideas about this site is its self policing and i'd love this to continue. The only way i can see this to work is if we do "self
police" and request the people who offend to stop. I know we're stopping someones personal expression here but for gods sake, we're
a car builders site not a soft porn producers site.
As for the idea of using a different browser - an even more serious offence, downloading and running un-authorised s/w. Instant dismissal.

I use the site at work more than the at home, so if the numbers drop then that's shite. It's a pity that some employers are so annal that
you can't have a picture of a lovely lady in your avatar (you've got to admit that weldermans is superb).
I have a good calender behind my desk, Fluff n' Stuff (watch peoples faces during interviews ) and a naked Kelly Brook on my desk top, I
suppose some may be offended, but I don't give a f**k.
I was thinking of changing my avatar, so for now I'll avoid any tits.

So have we!
Though I don't have a problem with it at home!
I consider it a privelidge, not a right, that I can use my work laptop for private use at all and it is very nice at times, to have a look at
lunchtimes, and breaks, for instance, at the latest posts etc.
Whatsmore I even have a 3G card so I can get online when i'm on site in customers premises!
However, the document that I signed at work, precludes me from accessing "INAPPROPRIATE" material on it.
It does not neccesarily need to specify what that may be , wether it is bare breasts, bikini breasts, badger baiting or whatever!!
If it does not belong in the modern workplace, then I potentially put myself at risk of disciplinary action by accessing it.
And if I accidentally access something "inappropriate" I am supposed to close it immediatly and report the occurence to our IT department,
who will, I presume, block the URL to prevent any further acess by anyone in our (Worldwide)organisation, ever!
I think this "INAPPROPRIATE" is the key word here, if you apply the logic, WTF has a pair of tits got to do with a website supposedly
dedicated to building sportscars for £250!
Whilst you could probably dismiss 50% of the avatars as not being appropriate or relevant to car building, some are very obviously less so than
others!
I love this forum and its been a key part in the building of my car and I would hate to lose the privelige of being able to access it when I
choose.
PERHAPS? This time the serial offenders will take notice and accept the reasons for the concerns.
It's not that we don't like to see these images ever, its about not being able to avoid them as avatars.
And that the year is 2006 and it's not about employers being anal, but about a very real threat of litaigation and cries of "constructive
dismissal" or "harrassment"by the over sensitive money grabbers out there who are just looking for an opportunity to take a business
to the cleaners.
Probably the longest post i've ever written, i'll stop now.
Regards to all

When this was covered previously i offered to write an addin for the users control panel so they can select a tick box to enable/disable the showing
of avatars.
However i got no response from the ChrisW to give me the go ahead.
Im still happy to write this to give individual users the option of disabling avatars long as ChrisW can find the time to install the patch.

Im happy the way it is but thats cos i dont work in a large office and my Boss is a top lad.
All i would say maybe it would be nice to have a button in the profile section that would allow avatars to be either hidden or visible.
This topic has been covered before and it couldnt be argued either way such that ChrisW had a clear view. Maybe a new pole for the hidden option would
be the way to go.

If we are to self police may I ask that in the future if inapropriate avatars are displayed that we all speak with a similar polite voice and request
the member to remove it.
In the past encouragement has been given when "inapropriate" avatars have been posted.
This sends the wrong message.
Please think before posting is what I'm trying so say I guess.
I never look at "Mad House" when in work but have been "caught" once or twice opening things from the home list. Pleasecould
we all state in the subject if something is NOT work safe.

Why don't we have a 'watershed' approach?
In your profile - you set the the times you want adult content to be displayed.
E.g. between 08:00 - 21:00 - no adult avatars.
This will allow a COMPROMISE for those wishing to see tits and those not - so between these times these avatars will not be visible too you.
It allows full customisable control.
It will however need coding!
If you don't employ a watershed - you will see everything all of the time...
Sound fair?
------------------------------------
If you believe you're not crazy, whilst everybody is telling you, you are - then they are definitely wrong!
