Personally, if space is a problem as it appears to be, I would invest in a second hand boxford. The foot print is surprisingly small. I'm a time
served fitter & turner and my AUD does the job, it does'nt take up too much room in my single garage, and is solidly constructed. They were
used for training and light toolroom work, so designed with this in mind. Its ideal for most jobs (discs, drums obviously not) and can be picked up
quite reasonably compared to an equivalent myford. There's lots of add-ons, and spares available.
I looked at a few of these modern new small lathes, but was dissapointed with the materials some of the components were made from and some of the
workmanship they exhibit. Perhaps being a turner by trade I'm being a little critical, but they don't compare to a solid cast iron
lump.
Apart from fitting a coolant system to my boxford, my only other planned mod is to upgrade the motor / starter system for a slightly more powerful
setup.
