Manifold and Exhaust Cost
Whats about the average cost for a full custom made stainless exhaust system, manifold, pipes and silencer.
I know most on here don't have V6's so wondering what a single side might have cost you, then I can doubleit for my V6 to give me a rough
idea of cost
Cheers

My stainless V6 system consists of 2 x (3 way) headers running to a 2:1 collector, dummy cat and 8" silencer, and finally twin tail pipes. The
whole lot cost just over £1000.

About 50 quid, and a bit of time.
That should bring the average down.

Thanks for the info, it confirms my worst fears I now have to find nearly 1k to sort my exhaust issues out (especially as I can't weld one)
unless 907 can sort my exhaust out for £50 :p

Yup, I could do that. No problem.
Firstly spend £900 of your 1k on s/s pipe, bends & sheet, perf tube, then a s/h TIG set.
With the remaining £100 stick some petrol in your car and get yourself down to Suffolk and for £50 I'll teach you to TIG weld.
You should have enough left for a McD on the way home.
Make your system, then flog the welder. You'll be quids in.
Scratch build. You know it makes sense.

Sorry to steal thread...
Maybe dumb question but can`t the exhaust be mig welded??
Maybe regular steel for lowcost??
Beware of what you wish.. for it may come true....

Yes you could Mig them. it just doesnt look as nice as Tig. you could also use Mild steel if you wanted ( thats whats used on cars normally) again...
it just doesnt look as nice, and it has the likelyhood of rusting / rotting away

You could mig them from mild steel, but the cost of stainless manifolds is the fabrication and the cost of the mandrel bends, not the material.
All the pipe you will need will be well under £100, but it'll cost a lot more than that to mandrel bend it, and then fitting the tubes is a BIG
job!!
You need no gaps at the joins, certainly I had no more than 0.5mm at any of the gaps I welded in my manifold (see archive). This means that you need a
belt linisher unless you have the patience of a saint.
The equivalent manifolds alone to the one I made for my 4 cyl vauxhall engine were £700.
Mine has also started cracking after 600 miles, due to differential expansion apparently, and over winter I will be cutting it up and making the
primaries individual with slip-fit collectors to stop the cracking.
Apparently even the expensive manifolds suffer this problem, and I made mine fully welded as the springs and joins for a slip fit manifold would not
pass sva easily.
Unfortunately (and no doubt Paul, 907 will back me up on this) with knowledge of doing a job comes the knowledge of how much of a pain the arse it can
be and how much of your £1000 goes into paying for the hassle that the fabricator has suffered in doing all the learning!!

....................and will be no cheaper, the steel pipe is probably 5% of the total cost, the rest is labour and the upkeep of a £30K mandrel
bender.

Thanks for the replies,
I was thinking locost on materials only, not the big picture...
Maybe get mild steel to practice on thin wall ant once the skills are mastered, then switch to Stainless.
Thanks again...
