Sticking expanded polystyrene to metal

Hi all...

Its getting colder, and having lined the garage, I now need to insulate the metal double door. I've got some expanded polystyrene - and tried to stick it to the door with impact adhesive - but it melted the polystyrene (Doh!)

Any idea what would be good to use?

Chris

Solvent free impact adhesive works reasonably well on a large surface area....

Otherwise some nice epoxy would do it (rather overkill though!!)

You could even use industrial (carpet adhesive) double sided sticky tape from B+Q.

Safety Related

Just as an aside....

Keep your PVC cables especially power ones away and out of contact with polystyrene.

It leaches the oils from the PVC and it then the PVC crumbles thus making a safety hazard by exposing the wires.

Not a problem if its only short term exposure, but if it was permanantly touching, it would be a problem waiting to happen in the future.

Just a thought..

don't use no more nails!! I'd been better off nailing it.

Most of it is now held on with gaffer tape though I bet it won't be long before I open the garage door to find all the polstyrene all over the car and floor

Thanks guys... I think I'll try the solvent free impact / spray mount.

I'll also check that non of the wires are imbedded in the polystyrene - most of them are surface mounted so should be OK

You can always cover the cables with gaffer tape etc.
