How to remove silicone sealant

Purely hypothetically if you had, say, put on a lexan screen and put a strip of silicone sealant along the bottom, and were now wanting to put an aeroscreen on, how would you get rid of the silicone sealant from teh scuttle?

I've tried a knife (removes the top part), meths and a heat gun. Any other suggestions?

If it's the normal domestic type of silicon sealant (not a 'special' car type) then you can get silicon sealant remover from the plumbing section of most DIY stores. It's used when people want to replace sealant round a bath.

Probably worth trying it out on a remote corner of the GRP before using in a visible area! It does get used with baths made of fibreglass, so it should be ok.

HTH,
David

Never used the stuff. But silcon is pretty inert stuff!
- A lot of modern baths/showertrays are grp so i presume it would be ok with them, or would mention specifcaly that is was not. However a test is alwyas bast. Have a good wipe of an area you can affor to loose, leave it a while, and see what it looks like!

I'd mechanicaly remove as much as i could first as well, a lot might just peel off depending on how well it stuck.

I used this to remove all the bathroom sealant from my part built Tiger B6. What a ball ache to do!!! It more hardened the sealant so it could be scraped off rather than simply removed it.
