I have just bought a v storm which has the Aprilia RSV 1000 engine. I was told by the previous owner that it had an issue with the cooling system.
I had a couple of short runs out in it yesterday and the temperature reached 115C at which point i stopped driving.
I drained the system yesterday and checked it over.
The system has had the thermostat removed for some reason. I refilled the system and bled any air in it. I then drove it again.The temperature still rose to around the 115-120 C mark. The cooling fan starts at 95c but the engine temperature still remains high.
I will take another look at it today but just wanted to know if anyone else has had similar problems.

Has it got a electric water pump fitted to pump the coolant from the radiator at the front, then around the coolant system.

The radiator is in the rear behind the seat bulkhead. I do have an electric pump which came with the car and was looking at adding another radiator to the system to make improvements.

Where is the radiator mounted on these? Is there a decent amount of cool air passing through it?

The passage of cool air does not seem to be very good. It is ducted up from beneath the floor and pulled through the rad with the fan. I am now considering adding a second rad or increasing the size of the existing one.

Is the fan blowing/sucking the right way? (depends how it's mounted)

Could you divert some air from the top inlet, to the rad?

Adding additional vents is on my plan for improving airflow.

Is the water pump definitely working? Are all the hoses and radiator getting warm?

There often won't be a thermomstat if there is an electric water pump.

Did the original owner say that it used to cool OK and that's now become a problem?

I seem to have solved the cooling problems. I drained the system and refilled it making sure to bleed any air, it now seems fine.
However I think it may need a new clutch as it feels like its slipping.
There are other minor faults but nothing I cant fix in time. Altogether i am pleased with the car, just need some sunshine now.

What oil's it got in it? Fully synthetic will make the clutch slip, only use semi synthetic in these engines.
Also, take out the clutch pack and rough up the metal plates. A fine concrete slab or the floor will do for this, just make sure you clean off any debris

Can you get Barnett Clutch Springs for that engine?
You can get a full Barnett clutch kit from PDQ
Or you could try EBC springs

Did an oil change yesterday using recommended oil from main dealer and have heard about roughing up the metal plates which i may have a look at doing over the weekend.
I am a little concerned about the clutch not being man enough but plenty of others are running bike engines in cars of similar weight so I just think it is a maintenance issue.
