Hi All,
I need some extra hardrive space as mine is full to bursting with pics/vids/music and other misc rubbish.
Any recomendations ? Not really up on computer stuff anyhow ????????
Don't know whether to go for an external plug in type or shove one inside this one I'm typing this thread on (don't know if there's space in here till I open it up)
Not really wanting to save the file system of the Pentagon on the new one but, something to take any future junk to be accumulated. Currently got 40GB internal which is chokka

Depends on your budget and how confident you are on fitting a new internal hdd

just fitting a new internal hdd will probably be the cheapest option.

A usb external one is the easiest option. it also has the benefit of being easy to transport from one pc to another.

I run two external hard drives on mine one 300gb and one 500gb

It also depends on the PC case you have, does it have another HDD bay ??? some small form factor cases do not.

USB will be easier, you can also get some that have Incremental Backup software to backup the machine as well.

Also you can get 32GB USB sticks.. which are small and non buky, also do not require an external power.

40GB is not much these days. Ideal would be to get a bigger internal one and transfer the system to the new one (you need to be a bit careful but it can be done). Then you could use the existing one as an extra.

Edit: or keep teh existing one as the main disk for Windows and whatever programs you have installed, and move My Documents and any of your files to the new one.

btw, whichever you go for - or even if you stick with what you've got - I would back up important files regularly. My own preference is for an external disk for that, so you don't accidentally use it or overwrite files in everyday mode.

40Gb! How do you manage??

I've got three HDs now in the same case.
40Gb, 80Gb and 320Gb (even if 40 is partitioned off for Linux stuff)....

HDs are cheap as chips...... Got for a biggy. You'll noticed a performance improvement as well if you put data on one disk and the operating system on the other (ie then the computer can access the program on one disk and simultaneously the data files on the other rather than flitting to / from different bits of the disk drive)....

If your PC only has a 40Gb HD at the moment, it's odds-on that it's a pretty old machine. I dunno whether the newer SATA drives will work on it. So if you buy another HD it might not work with a newer machine if you upgrade in the future.

I'd buy an external USB drive and use that, you can then just plug it into any replacement machine in the future.

You can get 640Gb drives for £56 delivered, any bigger and they start to get more expensive in £ per Gb. and after a 40Gb drive, it'll be huge

HDs are a bit like women and cupboards, no matter how big they are, they'll get filled. I have a 640Gb RAID and once you start downloading stuff like the Star Wars series in 1080 HD even that starts to fill up

just a cautionary word, i know that we should all back up our docs and generally i do BUT....recently installed new internal 1TB drive well known make, i mirrored the old drive so as tro transfer all the old progs / applications withgout reinstalling...good job that i did it that way as the new drive failed after 4 weeks. I lost all the data that i'd inputted in that month.....

Another cautionary word (probably too late now!). If your system is a little old I hope to god its got USB 2.0 ports or your external drive access will be excrutiating!
