PS3 not reading discs GRRR
donut - 19/1/09 at 07:18 PM

Bought a PS3 on 02/12/2007 and tonight it has stopped reading the discs.

Is it repairable or not cost effective? Obviously it's now out of warranty so I'm buggered.

When my son's SP2 stopped reading discs I searched online, Got some cleaning info, a minor stip and clean took 10 mins and it has been fine ever since.......touch wood.

To be honest it's hardly been used except for the past few weeks when my son bought Little Big Planet which he has been glued to!!

I only watch the odd DVD and play a game maybe once every other month. My boys only bought themselves PS3 games since Xmas!

Warranty has nothing to do with it. The 1 year warranty is a con made up by manufacturers to save them having to take the liability for faulty products and poor manufacturing.

The Sale Of Goods Act requires goods to be:
Satisfactory quality
As described
Fit for purpose
and
Last a reasonable length of time

13 months is not reasonable for a piece of consumer electronics, particularly one as expensive as a PS3. Your gripe is with the seller, not with Sony - don't let the shop try to fob you off with that one.

Seems that sony have been replacing them FOC so I'll call Game tomoz (where i bought it) and see what they say 1st. If it's a known fault then they may just say bring it in for a swap. But you're right, 13 months is not good!!

seem to remember reading somewhere sony where fixing peoples ps3 even outside 12months, i'll have a looky..

bigpig - 19/1/09 at 08:34 PM

Yep, sometimes Sony can be good. I've heard mixed things. A friend of mine got her TV fixed for free after 13 months, but I've seen forum postings of people having to pay for PS3 repairs (though these seem mostly related to system updates leaving the machine unbootable).

The bluray drive isn't unknown to fail, they amerian forums put it at $150, so prolly about 75 - 80 quid UK (the blu ray lenses arn't cheap)

If you do consider a new PS3 instead, backwards compatibility was dropped from newer machines. Back in 2007 they were still using software emulation (having dropped the hardware emulation), but from my understanding the later machines have no emulation at all.

Just phoned Sony and they are collecting it on Wednesday and will return it within a week.

Although it should never have happened....what good after sales service!

Mine done exact same thing was working 1 day, turned it on the next and nothing and like yours it wasnt used a lot!!

Seems its a common fault some are putting it down to cheap blu-ray drives.

Although I got a refurbed one sent out and swapped on the door step think it was next day delivery.

Whats little big planet like was thinking of getting it for the mrs..

Do you ever do any online gaming??

Seconded

And its narrated by Stephen Fry

I have never even played Little Big Planet, i just watch the kids and it is an amazingly clever game.

johnston - 20/1/09 at 05:31 PM

recommendations taken, theres not alot out for it unless you like shooters

Does any one do online gaming I've been on with soul caliber and burnout but keep getting real hardcore gamers looks a bit daft when the specs come up and I've had a dozen online races and they've got 1500!!!!!

cd.thomson - 21/1/09 at 11:19 AM

thought id post this for you guys:

http://www.ps3lite.co.uk/.

Cant be used for prerelease games but will find the cheapest price for anything thats already out. £20 for LittleBigPlanet I think.

LBP is brilliant, although I dont like playing it as it makes me feel like im trapped in some kind of nightmare!

Oh and dont worry about being a n00b online, just know that it means youre a normal person. Remember that these people with 1500 races under their belts are 14 y.o. with social difficulties. You're a locostbuilder

And yes before anyone crackswise, there is a difference!

Yep, little big planet is pretty much the only game (not on download) that is worth buying. MGS4 is a bit of a let down, but not too bad. Its a nice play on the physics type games. Not quite a World of Goo style more platformer.

Wipeout HD on download is good.
