many bad sounds from the HD and a lack of memory (RAM) no DVD re writer and a deffinate lack of legal windows, i'm in the market for a new PC

apart from all the regular high street stores has anyone any recomendations of a decent supplier ?

If you do buy a Dell then do an imediate reinstall of windows as it comes preloaded with a milion things you dont need (trials, etc etc) that will slow it down.

IMO id build your own. i made mine 4 yrs ago for £250 inc legal windows XP pro with a mix of new and used parts, its only JUST coming up for replacement.

Spec was P4 2.4 ghz, built in graphics and auido, 512k ram (upgraded to 2gig more recently for £30), 40 GB HD for OS install, 130 GB HD for storage.
Was more than enough to run Autocad LT and basic sketchup drawings and surf/download etc.

Im just about to do it again but this time with deicated Graphics card and the budget is £3-400

I'll have a look at building up a dell or mesh type pc, the aldi pc gets a lot of votes in the pc mags i was flicking through today.

Basically its a home pc i'm after nice and fast proccesor good ram probs 4gb as vista needs a 1/4 of that to run.i also fancy a digital tv card so i can use this instead of buying a DVD recorder for the humax in the living room.

Aldi, Tesco or Asda, always have good value pc's for sale.

I wouldn't build my own again as you can't make them for the price that the supermakets sell them at, I would only build myself if spec was important.

Bloody hell! Mine cost me almost 2k to built last year! Bet its out of date the same as a £300 would be now!

hi - my 2peneth. i've stopped buying new - still have 2 dells from about 4 yrs ago, but as i replace any pc home or work i buy 2nd hand - normally from a guy on ebay ( there's obviously loads of traders). i reckon the specs/quality is good. example from early Dec. IBM thinkcentre p4 2.8ghz, 2gb ram, 80gb h/drive, hyper threading- just cd rewriter as was for daughters home work -£100. the guy i use is happy to spec one to whats needed - more ram, bigger hd etc. and with the IBM's you get the asy restore option should a nasty virus get thru your security. have bought 4 this way in last 3 yrs without any hassles......just a thought

Second hand has been my problem,ok so i am sure it is possible to get a good deal on someone elses old PC but i was a tad unfortunate with mine.

My local computer shop are pricing up a box of tricks at the moment, and to be honest i should have gone to them last time like my 1st pc which never let me down.

I just need more options so i can cross reference the quote i am now waiting for.

Morgan Computers are always worth a look - they sell a lot of "last year's model" that are usually good spec but 'out of date' on the high street.

I have found Morgan Computers have been a 100% reliable supplier over 20 years.
