Firefox Vs IE7
donut - 19/2/09 at 01:51 AM

18 or so months ago a friend of mine bought a laptop, he did not put on any Anti Virus software and a few weeks ago after visiting a normal non sexy website it all went horribly wrong.

SO my Q is

Which is more secure when visiting sites, Fire Fox or IE7? I use both but would rather use just one.

Ta

Andy

P.S. I have AVG on my PC.

Dont know if either would prevent an unprotected computer from a virus but i just use firefox.

I use firefox, but in that case I would have downloaded Avast antivirus for free and not have had a problem.

Also worth downloading microsoft windows defender which is also free and looks after everything else other than virus's.

I have just started to use Google Chrome as Firefox was taking forever to load and was using up 70mb of memory. Its only a web browser....70Mb!

Firefox dosen't use anything like that amount of memory --- my guess is you have set it to preload pages linked to the web page you are on.
With most modern browsers you stuff them full of add-ons and extensions and forget that each thing you add slows the browsers and eats into memory.

Firefox setup properly with the Adblock Plus extension is about as secure as you get.

Google Chrome is really just Konqueror the Linux KDE desktop browser re-skinned and ported to Sindows. --- even in the Linux world it isn't the broweser of choice and it isn't that widely suported and an awful lot of sites simple don't work with it.

The most effective free anti-virus is Avira unlike a lot of the others it doesn't give loads of false positives it is also very skinny on memory use.

IE7 is just a complete mess the user interface is a massive step backwards from the previous IE versions

I use Firefox for 99% of the time. Only use IE for the odd badly written web page that has not been done in a way that is not IE dependant.
Been using it for years.

"Apple goes further than just recommending the use of one scanner to advise the use of multiple tools. "Apple encourages the widespread use of multiple anti-virus utilities so that virus programmers have more than one application to circumvent, thus making the whole virus writing process more difficult,"

IE7 security see

http://www.channelregister.co.uk/2009/02/17/internet_explorer_attacks_go_wild/

Setting up Firefox

Go to the "Edit" --- "Preferences" Menu

Select " Privacy " tab
Then start by changing the cookie settings.

"Not accept 3rd part cookies".

"Keep cookies unil I close Firefox"
Set Firefox to "Always clear private data" at the end of a session
Then use "settings" to select what data you want to clear and which you want retain.

You can then go to other tabs and customise other settings to suit how you use the computer for example -- if you have a slow internet connection increase the cachce size or if you have a fast connection youc can lower the cache size.

The Next move is to go to the "Tools" ---> "Add-ons" menu --> "Get Add-ons" Search for "Add-block Plus" and down load and install it when Firefox restarts set Add-Block Plus to use "Easy List "
