Computer power supply help
Andy W - 23/3/09 at 01:15 PM

Hi
my computer stoped working last night, checked out the power supply today and found it to be dead. I got a power supply from an old pc I had, connected it up and nothing. Done a bit of discoonecting various things and found that with the four pin plug from the power supply removed from the motherboard the cooling fan above the processor starts, but with this connected i get nothing. The only thing I've noticed is my original power supply has a brown wire connected to one of the orange wire at the end of the 20 pin blockand my new one doen't, will this make a difference? or do you think i have a motherboard problem?

Thanks for any advice

Andy

Check the original power supply for internal fuses.

Look for a dead short -- for example a loose screw rolling about on the motherboard or a damaged usb socket.

If you have a dead short the thernal circuit brakers in the power pack will cut off the supply instatly.

Internal fuse on original supply is ok
