My old computer wont seem to load windows xp up anymore. i was only using it to remove all my old doccuments onto the new computer but i cant switch
it on now to get at them. It freezes on the black screen with the windows logo but doesnt tell me theres a problem. Ive tried starting it in the
other safe modes and each time it sticks at the line
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWSSystem32DRIVERSgagp30kx.sys
Ive left it for ages and it wont move on. How can i get past this point? Thanks.
That is your VGA driver hanging, if you just need to get files off it you could download and burn an ubuntu live CD with another computer and boot from the cd and copy the files off the harddrive that way.
Is vga something to do with the monitor? Could it have anything to do with using a kvm switch. I dont know what a ubuntu live cd is, are there any drawbacks to it? I would have liked to have given the pc to my dad when ive finished with it if it can be fixed?
why not just plug the drive into your new PC?
Where do i plug it in?
Take the side off and plug it into the cables that look right.
depending on stuff, take photos and post them, but it should be pretty idiot proof, don't force anything, and be aware of the keys on whatever
type of cable it is, they stop poo going in backwards
oh, and shut down first
An old drive will probably be IDE and the new computer SATAII. If he doesn't know where to plug it in I doubt if he's going to strip it out of the old computer, change the jumper over to slave and put it in another without a bit more instruction than that. A lot of IDE cables I've used don't have a key and rely on the red stripe going to get the right side of the connector. Try booting it from the windows disk and running a repair, there should be basic drivers on there to get started before you install the graphic card software again.
That's probably better instruction
Usually I'd try a bit harder, but I've been awake since thursday morning.
Thanks everyone, Ill have a look for a disk but i dont think it came with one. Its typical this, it could have gone in the bin if i could just get the last few things off it
