3D CAD

Have only ever fiddled with this in the past.

The concept of drawing solids rather than lines was something I had previously pretty much not managed to get a grip of.

Anyway, I've been making more of an effort recently to properly use it.
I'll need to chuck all of those crap old drawings away now.

Here - vaguely - is what I've been doing

Long way to go, but it's good fun. Rescued attachment CAD.jpg

i'd love to be able to do that. i struggle drawing one line though

You just have to get stuck into it, make a mess of it then work out what you did wrong.

That whole thing with the round tubes, I only worked out how to do properly tonight.

It's good fun.

I wouldn't invest any time and effort into learning 3D autocad.
Solidworks, Inventor or ProE are easier, more flexible and faster! They're just a newer generation of Solids Software.

If you get into it
Invest in solidworks
Easier quicker and better

I have Autocad 2009 on my desktop at work, that's my reason for sticking with it. Would love to try some of the other stuff though.

blakep82 - 29/4/09 at 10:54 PM

is there any free versions of solidworks to get started with?

Ditto that....AutoCAD is great for 2D....and that's all..

I will follow suit on solidworks, im biased tho as i use it all day every day!

Solidworks all the way. Spent a couple of weeks doing this at work. Still not finished but it gets addictive and my boss thinks it was all done at lunchtime.

lookin good wescottishmatt
Have you a to scale model/assembly of the engine by any chance?

wescottishmatt - 30/4/09 at 07:49 AM

No model for the engine yet. I did the chassis from the 'Haynes manual' and kinda fudged the rest in place. Might try and measure the engine in the garage before it goes in the car but I did it to get an idea for a colour scheme and graphics set for the car.

Your Nearside tyre is on the wrong way round

looks good though. we're in the process of purchasing 2x seats and training of solidworks 2009. There is government funding available in this area at the moment where small businesses can get 60% off the total costs of software + training

I can imagine the bodywork being a little time consuming in certain areas!
I started a ZX9 lump, depending how detailed you want it, it takes bloody ages!

wescottishmatt - 30/4/09 at 11:17 AM

Thats not the biggest problem. The wheels aren't attached to anything so being the wrong way round isn't my biggest concern. But yes I did realise that and well done for spoting it.

zilspeed - 30/4/09 at 03:45 PM

Now that really is good.

Must look into this a bit further.

Seems to be some kind of strange perspective problem as well, the wheels nearest the front of the picture look significantly smaller than the ones further way.
