I need a little help with her laptop. It keeps crashing. The screen just freezes, Cursor can be moved but nothing else works. Have to turn it off
by holding the power button in.
Its an Acer TravelMate 2420
I've installed Speedfan to try to help matters, Getting some high temps
As I type the temps are
HD0: 39*
Temp 1: 57*
Temp 2: 30*
I don't know what these temps mean and can't find out. I have selected auto fan speed but if I go into config, under Fan's there are
non in there so I'm thinking that speedfan isn't controlling the fan speed.
Please help as I'm hopeless with laptops.

i wouldnt be worried about those temps, as laptops generally run warm compared to desktop pc's. whilst gaming my laptop gets upto 80 degrees
with no problems
At the very least, use it on a flat hard surface so that air can circulate and get through the cooling vents. Laptops don't like being used on actual laptops, or bedspreads etc. You can get purpose built 'stands' but it is easy to locost something similar. If you take the cover off, give a good clean out with the vacuum and/or compressed air.

Mine's hotter than that now, nearly burnt my leg when I sat it on my lap once...
Mind you the fan on mine's about an inch wide, but the problem's half cured by setting the power cable underneath the back edge thereby
giving me an extra 4-5mm of space for that fan to suck.
There are "frames" you can buy that have got fans set inside them if you think they're any good. Look up "laptop coolers"
Bit late but.. as said above, that doesn't sound hot but hold your hand near the fan exhaust and guage wether it is actually hot by how much it
burns
If it is uncomfortably hot and this is an old laptop, take the bottom panel off to gain access to the fan and peel off the frankly revolting mess
thats stuck to it, PCs are basically a big air filter and after a couple of years they do become surprisingly gunky inside!
Did this to my friends overheating laptop last month and temps went from 65deg to about 45.
