ISP Time Again
flak monkey - 22/5/09 at 11:37 AM

Well its time to renew the ISP contract again... and as alway looking for the best deal.

The only stipulations are:

It must have unlimited download limit - none of the hidden limit rubbish most ISP's have.

I am on ADSL, and am not in a cable area..

I currently pay £15/month through Eclipse for a 20Gb/month limit and havent had any real issues. Ideally dont want to pay much more than that for an unlimited package.

I dont need a modem or router

Your recommendations please....

Dont have sky, and have no intention of getting it either....

Also no intension of changing the phone from a BT line at the moment, though I could discuss that option with my parents...

BUT..... tiscali has just been bought by talk talk so expect the service to go downhill. (PS I'm with Tiscali atm and looking to move on) I've not heard any complaints from Sky BB so it may be the one of choice

Cheers

Be internet.

14.99 pm true unlimited.

Solid service for the last 2 years.

If i recommend you we can have 2 months free internet

Bethere, no download limits, ADSL2+ (so up to 24mbit depending on line speed) decent latency, don't block anything apart from port23 (and they'll unblock that if you have a static IP or ask nicely, I think)

£17.50 if you take the contract option.

Downsides are no free email etc.

oh, and if you download like I do, you'll run out of drive space every 3 months

That, too, but you should let me recommend you.

3Mb !!!!! I dream of getting 3Mb..... I'm limited to 2Mb.

ashg - 22/5/09 at 04:10 PM

50meg cable rocks

flak monkey - 22/5/09 at 05:21 PM

The Be deal looks good. Will have a look into that

rgrs - 22/5/09 at 05:37 PM

Another vote for bethere, i have now done 5 connections with them, they all have completed within 5 days. Remember it is an adsl2+ service so if you get 2 meg with bt etc you should get 4 meg and a lot higher upload speed as well.
Free modem as well and after 3 months there is no lock in on their contract it becomes month by month rolling.
Cant fault them at all.

Be or O2 Same company as Be but different deals or Plusnet.

Any of the above are absolutely fuss free for migrations.
Be and O2 are good for bandwidth and speed, Plusnet are better for extras such as decent spam filltering, mailboxes and webspace.

I had to leave plus a couple of years ago, their bandwidth limits were getting tighter and they were filtering more and more ports, made them almost unusable for my needs.

Ninehigh - 22/5/09 at 09:06 PM

Sky were pretty good, they said we could only get 2 meg so they only charged us for 2 meg (seeing as they could have charged us for 16 and then said "up to"

O2 have been great as far as customer service goes (no call centres in far flung places either) however the actual service has been somewhat lacking (calling them every week or two to get back online) although it sounds like BT's crap lines...

Also o2 is half price if you have a contract phone with them

Additional: Sky gave us a 1gb per month limit, and I'm sure we exceeded that a few times but they never said anything. O2 have a vague "fair use" thingy but my stepson's been downloading 3 or 4 gb games constantly for the past few months and they've not said anything either...

Seems like our phone line doesnt support ADSL2+ yet, but should do within the next couple of months so will hang in there with my current provider.

The O2 are looking like a reasonable option as I have a contract phone with them too.....

geoff shep - 1/7/09 at 06:10 AM

O2 not available where I am so I ended up with newnet. Not quite unlimited but unlimited off peak and similar price and it's a monthly contract. Reliability has been good and speed, but best of all is first class support - from a real person who has been very helpful and extremely knowledgeable. In fact, that was the main reason I migrated from pipex who were dire. I found them through one of those comparison sites filtered for service rather than cost.
