I can't seam to get anything newer than net framework 1.1 sp1 to install on my PC

I just get loads of errors like this:



and microsofts website is about as useful as a chocolate fire guard

any ideas ?

Is it a work pc? I suspect its a rights issue, can it be run as administrator, you also need to ensure windows installer 3.1 is already on your machine.

As Rich says. Either that or something else is running preventing access to that file.

Or try installing in safe mode, sometimes works.

its my home PC and I've got an admin account, and its already got installer 3.1

Ok mate try this from a command prompt

cd windows

cacls assembly /G SYSTEM:F

then press the enter key to run the command.

then hit the retry button on the installer error page.

I had a nightmare getting it to install in the past...

Do you have the latest service pack with the latest patches?


In the end I just rebuilt the machine...... Im sure there was some process running that shouldnt have been....

try killing all but essential software

or set up another account grant it admin and try install using that account.

or try a newer ver of .net ( as they are ussually backward compatable ) sure I put 3.5 on a win2k8 server the other day

It's a rights issue,
Folder assembly is not assessible by the admin or the system account with enough authority to change the rights on it, effectively locking you out of the folder. You need to some how find a way to "break" into the folder and change the rights so it can be be granted full control.

one option would be convert the File system to FAT32 this would remove the NTFS rights. Don;t know there may also be a ntfs rights craking tool utilility thing that you could use......

Try doing those moves in safe mode,(pressing f8 during boot),other than that it seems like the acl (access control list) permissions are screwed for that folder.Can't help further as it gets a bit tricky to advise by messaging. Cheers Rich

the disk is a raid 0 array if that makes any difference (nvidia controller)

but I think I might have bigger problems

it hangs when booting safe mode, I've started getting 'can't read system32 folder' error again and scan disk found a whole load of errors in the index's


looks like I'm going to give up and get the new HDD a bit sooner than I wanted to.....

Mmm, sounds like you disk is at end of life and is corrupting the file system, hence your troubles, get your data off asap onto a stick or drive.

1 new disk and 24 hours later (about 6 hour just updating from SP1 )

and it seems to work


what would you recommend to test the old disks ? (now that they are redundant)
