My parents have lost their internet connection.
Set up at the moment is:-
BT line in > ASDL filter > wire > ASDL Modem > usb wire > wireless router / hub > space > laptops.
I've run the microsoft repair network thingy, and it can't even find the modem. I've tried putting in the 192. etc thingy into a
browser, but that won't open. I've tried the software that came with the modem, and it says "no device".
I've tried the obvious of switching off, waiting 3 minutes and switching it back on.
I'm suspecting the modem itself is faulty. How can I fault find it? If it is knackered, I have a spare replacement, but how do I get the
settings from the old one to transfer to the new one?
I have a spare ASDL modem since I went wireless, and a spare wireless router / modem. So I could replace all the kit, but would have to set up the
network again.

what brand is the wireless router?
I know my parents had a free netgear one from BT which for some strange reason, would turn off the wireless functionality every now and again. Have
you got a spare cat 5 cable (network cable) which you could use to connect the router and a laptop together? If you can connect them up, type in the
192.168.0.1 thingy and see what happens. If you get through to the router settings dialogue then it means the wireless functionality has been switched
off...
If you still can't get on even with a wired connection, try looking for a reset button of some sort... also, throwing the router against the wall
sometimes seems to work
Did it work that way before?
try putting the modem straight into a pc usb port then trying the set up disc etc.
The 192. thingy probably won't work on a USB connection anyway.
Cheers

My parents had a similar problem with a BT modem. Kept on losing connection, the DSL light would be intermitently on. In the end BT replaced the modem and all's well since then....
The settings for BT adsl internet connections are pretty much the same as any other uk broadband
PPOA
VPI 0
VCI 38
MTU 1492
You will also need the user name although I think the password is not required.
However I would first connect to the existing router using an ethernet cable rather than a USB as this is much less likely to cause problems.
This may require changes made within the windows internet connection setting in the windows control panel.
If you are unsure of the LAN IP address of the router download and install Angry IP scanner using this you should be able to find the LAN IP
address of both the router and the PC you are working from.
