What hard drive do I need
Jasper - 5/10/09 at 03:41 PM

I built my own PC a couple of years ago, I've got 2 x 350GB internal SATA HDD.

I want to add another big drive As they're permanently full, but not sure which speed to go for:

Can anybody recommend one?

if you don't need internal, there seems to be plenty of external 1tb drives for about £60

personally if you have 700 gb of data I would be asking the following questions

Do you need all the data you already have ?
Archive some data off ( ZIPed to DVD )

can you afford to loose it ?
700 gb of data is a lot to loose

is it backed up ?

Id say you were better of with some NAS storage. That will be indipendant of OS upgrades as your currnet hardware is 2 years old .
Sorry this was only going to be a one live answer got a bit carried away

Generally if it's just a storage drive, you'll do well with one of the newer 5200 rpm green drives, they're not fast, but they're cheap and quiet.

Otherwise, I'd buy a nice fast 7200rpm drive and put up with the noise

My personal preference is WD and samsung drives, I've not had much trouble either.

I'd buy either of these, depending on what I said up there:
Slow or Fast

Go for a big external NAS drive

You can access most NAS drives by wired network or USB as already said they are OS independent.

Everything is backed up in two places - but I've got a lot of HD movies and they really take up some room (4-10GB each...)

Are the NAS drives as fast as an internal SATA one though?

I've got two Seagate Barraccuda ones in there now and they've been perfect, probably go with another one then, £63 ain't bad!
