cd/dvd drive poorly
AndyW - 14/12/09 at 04:50 PM

Another question to the font of all knowledge. My cd drive on my pc plays audio cd's, dvd and runs software. Problem is when i put a blank DVD/CD into in to burn some stuff onto it, it keeps saying please insert blank cd. Even when I eject and close again keeps saying the same. How can I get this to work? I have unistalled the drive and re-installed bu still not working. Real pain as I need to burn some files to disc. Any help greatfully received as usual....

ta.

Have you tried a different brand of disk? Some drives can be a picky about playing particular brands.

Can the drive definately handle rewriteable DVDs if it's fairly old it may not.

it can do rw cd's but now you mention it not sure on dvd's although the pc came with cd/dvd burning software so would have thought it could. any way to check for sure????

I'd say it can either not write DVDs, or the write laser has packed up. They tend to do that after a few years.

At the price they cost new (~£20) it's not worth the bother. Just buy a new (and probably much faster) one.

NOTE: make sure you check whether it's SATA (small connector) or PATA (wide ribbon cable) before you buy!
