I've been asked to look a mates brand new laptop (ASUS K50IN)
it won't recognise the CD/DVD rom drive (dosen't show in computer at all)
device manager lists it, but gives an error code 39 ('windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or
missing'
its Win 7 x64 home premium
I thought I could just copy it over again from my machine, but none of the users have permission to do it (only sytem and trusted installer do)
any ideas ?
(I'm searching the internet, but not found anything useful yet)
Has the drive ever worked? could be a faulty drive....
sounds like a faulty drive. uninstall the drive from device manager, reboot and it should reinstall it. try it then.
Look on tinter web Error 39 you need to remove the High and lo pass filters in the reg
Have a look here
I blame Norton. I'd bed 5p it's installed and has messed with the driver filters as Mads4x4 has said.
Uninstall Noton anway if it is installed - remove the reg files from the reg as post above and reboot. Then install a decent AV product!
Not sure if the latest Norton still needs a downloaded removal tool to remove ---- it is close to being more difficult to remove than any virus.
