I want to get the .com and .co.uk domains for my new company. I can see its easy to reguster them, 123 reg do what i want for about £24 for 2
years.
If i want an email address using the .co.uk name, do i have to always pay roughly £1 a month?
If i want a website with a few pages on it do i always have to pay roughly £5 a month?
Ive looked at office live and it implies i can create my own free site - is that about right? Some other web site creators seem to ask for a monthly
fee.
Id like to have a go at creating my own site but never done anything like this before. Ive had a local company offer email and web hosting for £10 a
month with a free web holding page. Without knowing what size i need, bandwidth, no. of pages etc its hard to decide what to opt for.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Darren.
you pay for the name you want x/month
and for the hosting whoever you use most of the time its a set fee / year.
try www.mrsite.com you pay a one off fee you get your name you want and the hosting and a web site builder.

I know very little but I found it easier to register a name and the domain/email etc with the same company, keeps it all easier to manage, i used
>Tsohost< and found them superb and very helpful, I think its a very small company who cares about their
customers too (I had a good look around before I went for them).
Worth a look as they're cheaper than £5 a month and have reasonable bandwidth etc.
Making a website (although not quite professional quality) was also easier than expected although largely due to liberating a copy of Dreamweaver from
work that'd been stuffed in a draw for years!
I know theres a few on here who run websites to a much higher standard than I ever did so I'll let you get their proper opinions, although
I'd still say give Tsohost a look.

Try Microsoft office live, easy to use, cheap as well
I set a mate up on eukhost.com
Fairly cheap, can host about 5 domains on the same account, and less then £5 a month, over the year.
Depends really on the content of the pages, how much traffic you feel you should get, as most have limits.
Unsure what site you are creating, but are you going to have a data driven site, that might require a sql/mysql/access backend?
Also, sorry to complicate things, if you don't think you have the right skill set to create the site you require, but know people who do, then
what do they create pages in? html, php, asp, aspx.
Asp and aspx pages can only run on a windows hosting package.
A linux hosting packages is always cheaper though!!!!
I've got several domain names + email addresses registered and hosted by www.1and1.co.uk. Several years ago SWMBO had a catering business and we used them for a simple domain name and website (max 8 pages, from memory) plus email addresses, which came to a few £ a month.
Moonfruit is slightly more expensive I think but is soooooooo easy to use and you can get some really professional looking results.
my mate has his own computer company and when his customers want a .co.uk or .com he always uses getdotted.com, pay once and everything is free, they cheap as well, renew after 2 years also cheaps, i think if you buy one address you get second half price or something, if i want a .co or .com i wait till he buying and i get mine as the second one cheap.
I always recommend Orchard Hosting - used them for over 8 years now and very good support service. Prices are
pretty good too! I think I had downtime once in the whole time I've been with them.
Is your site for personal or business? £10/month seems a lot if your site is not going to be too big. I'd compare what you're being offered
through this company and the others mentioned above.
For £25 a year, I get:
1Gb space
40Gb (per month) of bandwidth
50 email inboxes
12 websites (domains)
10 MySQL databases
1 free UK domain name
number of auto-install scripts e.g. forums, shopping carts, galleries, CMS etc

I'd second Orhard Hosting - they have way too many features for me but the prices are excellent and the support is too!
Whoever you register the domain name with make sure YOU end up OWNING the domain name.
If they want own the name, then DONT go with them.
If anyone other than YOU owns your Domain name then it will be like them holding a Razor Blade to your Balls
I use Easily.co.uk, and you can speak to them on the phone. Whats more YOU OWN the domain name, and can point it at another domain name. (ie you can
use Canonical Naming)
PLEASE make sure YOU OWN your domain name.
This is Seriously Sound Advice.
EDIT: Looked at Orchard, looks fairly good.
If they own the Domain name. Register some other nondescript name with them, then register the name you want with someone else so you own the name,
then point it at the name at Orchard. That way you own the important name, and if you want to move, you can keep your main Domain name and point it to
the new site if you move. That way they dont have you over a barrel. ie use Canonical naming (CNAME) , It works for me!

I agree with wilkin re owning the domain name. All the domain names I have bought from Orchard I have always owned so dont think it will be a
problem.
I will send the owner a quick email asking him about the free domain name for you though and post back.
quick update from Orchard:
quote:
The domain is registered to the user, and it's only free for the first two years.
