Ha ha ha - success!!!

see here

Using EasyRecovery Professional (www.ontrack.co-uk) it was possible to recover vast majority of my file.

All other file recovery programs look for predfined signatures so will only work for deleted files, not for older versions of saved files.

This utility can find "files" according to user defined file signature.

It searches each sector for the defined file signature - in my case I knew what the text was at the beginning of my file and set 4 letters of this as the signature as well as offsets (from start of sector) to a range of values hoping this would appear near the start of the sector.

The search took around 1 hour 10 mins for 70 Gb disk and about 427 files, each file could being viewed for contents.

It turned out that last of the 4 files contained the vast majority of my file so it was possible to reconstitute the file !!! (probalby some info was lost but it was minor).

FYI.

Yeah, and always leave a trail of file versions/revisions.

I took a short digital forensics seminar with Kroll Ontrack - their main man is a bloody genius - if their programmes can't find the data it's probably long gone!
