After years of having slow adsl internet I decided to upgrade to Virgin cable which is supposedly a guaranteed near 10 mb connection.However I have
only been getting speeds of about 2.8mb which although better is still not what im paying for.
I rang and complained the day it was installed and was told it must be my PC as the connection speed was running at 10mb.
I though cable speeds were meant to be as paid for but found a few sites that show typical connection speeds and it seems most people get less than
they are paying for.
Am i just unlucky or have others found there cable speeds to be slow?.I know its not the PC as it is the same on any PC in the house and I have also
tried varying times of the day but it is always slow.
I do have 28 days from installation to change my mind and tell them to remove it but would then be without a phone line and would then have the
problem of getting reconnected and finding a new internet provider.

99% of the time I have 8.8 on a 10mb connection and in 5 years of having Virgin cable they've only lost my internet connection twice so I
can't grumble!!

My Virgin `10 meg' broadband is currently running at a lousy 3.8 meg....................the best I've ever measured (just after complaining....) was a whopping 5.5......................
Yeah my Virgin speed isn't that great and I've had it pack up quite a few times. All in it's not too bad and alright for me.
I will say though that it has one of the worst customer services I've ever had.

I know my old 486 running IPCop as router was the bottleneck, but since upgrading it to a pentium class box with PCI slots and 10/100 network cards I
get closer to what I pay for (depending on how many visitors my webite is getting/how many johnny foreigners trying to root my servers/force spam
through etc)
Turn your router and modem off overnight (when not in use ) and see if getting a fresh IP in the morning helps speed things up
Maybe there was something interesting there once and China/Russia and the other countries that plague me are sniffing round the IP addess you
currently have and bombarding you ...thus tying up your router?
Could it be that your router is somehow not configured 100%?
Does ping and traceroute show anything odd or interesting?
Worth a look in the routers logs for sure
Not been over -doing it on the downloads have you ?
I know they were talking about automated temporary caps on heavy usage users bandwidths

Just done a speed test on my virgin cable broadband, got a download speed of 9887kbps. That is on my laptop with a wireless router. I've been
with virgin since it was blueyonder, never had a problem.

Yeh I've had some issues with slow speeds. The other day got just over 2mb download speed but it still felt very sluggish browsing web pages. Tried again just now & getting 7.5mb. That's on a supposed 10mb connection. It's definitely less consistent than it used to be but I'll probably live with it.
is it always slow ?
Virgin trottle you download speed back after you have downloaded / uploaded a certain amount.

It could be a number of things. You could be quite low at the exchange, meaning your signal strength is low, or you could in fact have too much
signal, as virgin is analogue and digital signals, they have to balance the two.
I've recently had problems with my internet, it would constantly drop out. It turned out to be a signal based problem and a virgin signal booster
box did the trick.
Ring them up and emphasise the fact you consistantly get slow speeds. You'll have to go through the usual 'turn on and off your modem'
and 'what lights are on the modem'.
Any luck you'll get a decent engineer round. They'll test your signal strength and either decide your signal needs boosting at your end or
at the exchange. That or they'll need to lay some new cable down.

I am lucky to open 2 pages at the same time that have pictures.
Opening over 4 pages even at locostbuilders without images and it can take 2-3 minutes.
What network is that with?
I'm on 20Mb with Virginmedia, as long as I don't go mad downloading blurays during the day, my speed is usually bang on the money...

The good thing with VM is you don't get many outages. Their speed can suck at times though. I'd do a speedtest 5 times a day on a few days
of the week and e-mail it to them to show persistently poor performance. Then write to customer services and demand a discount (or the speed
you've paid for). I did this and got a nice little discount...
I'm currently on Be broadband (on old dicrepid overhead cables) and I'm getting:
unfortunately the cable company that networked my neighnbourhood did the entire area apart from my stretch of road Still the above speeds
aren't too bad except the upload...
Are you on the Cable or just a regualr line? I non-cable line will only be an up top service, and will depend on the distance from exchange etc.
If you are on cable then it should be the full 10Mg. I'm on a 20Mg cable line, and I see 20Mg always, sometimes even 21 unless I download a
lot during the day, then it gets throttled back to 5Mb. I've had a warning letter from them about the high volumes on dowbloads during the day,
so I do all my BluRay movie downloads between 9pm and 9am now, no problems at all.
If your on a cable line, then I would think the problem is with your kit.
Distance from the exchange is still a problem for cable users. That's why they have an order of signal strength within the exhange box, higher in the box being more strength
Strange, just tested ours now and this is the worst result I've had for Virgin:
Btw where are you two downloading blu ray from? And is it possible to stick it to a PS3 for watching?

Yea, cable companies often give big upgrades and price reductions when it comes to retaining customers.
If you ever think of leaving, always phone their retentions office.
