Fedora Core 2 - nice
britishtrident - 4/6/04 at 06:59 AM

Just put Fedora Core 2 on an old 500mghz PC for a mate -- very nice, only grumbles due to an excess of desktop annimation effects very slight slower than Core 1 in spite of the 2.6x kernel.

Install was long but without a hitch Windows networking worked from the start only needed the workgroup name changed and printer share set up.

Could you tell me what the 'eck you're talking about?

Is it an OS?

What desktops and browsers does it come bundled with as standard?

I take it you installed from CD ISO's?

Cheers,

Neil.

Is that Red Hats free version?

That's nothing, I've just put some new batteries in my calculator.

It's running fine.

Hmm

fedora is all very nice, but i have a few niggles with it (especially core 2 needing different graphics card drivers) and i just find it a little less user friendly than windows for what i need.

oh, and i really need proper asp/ .net support so that leaves me stuck with 2k3 server

all depends on the user, how much and how the machine will be used.

If you're at a text only prompt try 'startx' or edit the /etc/inittab file

id:3:initdefault:

to

id:5:initdefault:

Debian should give you a desktop straight off , but its usually easier and better to install debbian by getting/burning a Knoppix CD and running the HD install script see Knoppix web site for details see http://www.knoppix.com/ . Another very easy way is from a Libranet CD see http://www.libranet.com/

I have a spare Libranet CD kicking around (no Knoppix at moment as I keep giving them to people to let them try Linux booting from a CD) .
Also have a few spare copies of various Suse, Mandrake & Red Hat /Fedora versions if anybody want to pay the postage they can have em.
