I had a load of podcasts backed up on missus's comp (which I haven't had chance to listen to yet) and it broke, which means they've gone.. Is there a way of redownloading them, without deleting the whole list as itunes just says it's been done.

what kind of HD drive is it?

If it's eSATA, SATA, or man others, then you will be able to get a drive adaptor similar to this this then find the files and copy them to a new Hard Drive

Well it's had windows reinstalled onto it so even if is recoverable I wouldn't hold out hope of there being much left to recover.

Not sure about recovering your files, but get rid of iTunes and use CopyTrans... Much better software.
