I have installed the Google toolbar which incorporates a popup stopper.
It is around this point that someone tells me it's actually spyware / adware / steal your genetic material ware.
Whatever it works for me - it's currently telling me that it has blocked 162 popups. If you go to click a link which would have a popup, your
mouse cursor has a small yellow exclamation mark next to it.
Oh, and it's free, doesn't slow your machine to a crawl. This is being typed on a Compaq armada 1700 - PII 300. No probs.
tried that, just came up as site not available, some of the other download sites did the same as well
go to telewest blueyonder home page and the down load is there free gratis.....the only free thing they give away.....
Your browser may have been hijacked, not letting you go to those sites.
Sounds like a job for Spybot or Ad-Aware:

http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
Do a search on hijackers in the LB archives; lots of good posts about what to do (killing processes, deleting start-up programs, etc., etc.) if the
problem persists.

download the following:
Adware
Hijackthis (download on our site)
kerio
All thanks to British Trident for these... also got google toolbar... stops 'nearly' all pop-up's.
Your system has got a virus/worm which re-writes your homepage on startup. Sometimes with VERY dodgy (porn) sites.

Another couple of easy ways are to load the Avant Browser --- really just a major customisation of IE6 much the same to use but much better
tools, and for real control web filtering "Proxomitron" which is a web proxy (can also be used instead of ICS).
For the more adventurous the Firefox browser is good and much more secure than IE6 - but it can have problems with some non compliant websites.
Re toolbars the Google one seems OK but beware all toolbars some are definitely spyware including one from a very big internet retailer. Also
beware some freeware program that claim to be Popup Blockers are actually malware that causes more pop ups and are a devil to clear out.

hm,cant get to my messenger mail box now, goes to screen saver, likewise i cant download a prog as it wont open a compo site
John,
Sounds like a pretty big-time trojan you have there, so why don't you try HouseCall (free virus scan) at:
http://www.antivirus.com
If that doesn't work, can you get Hijackthis from Hellfire's site?
If you can, run it and save the log, and post the log here so we can tell you what to fix.
Something else you can do to kill whatever active proggie is screwing you up is hit CTL-ALT-DEL and end any weird-looking programs that are
running.
Maybe the best thing would be to do a System Restore to a happier time Even if you do that, be sure to run antivirus and the spyware programs.
sorted,i did a system restore AGAIN ,went back a few more days and its wroking again, ive got housecall and ad-aware but they didnt pick it up.thamks for yr help chaps
It must have a running process try using windows task manager (ctrl alt del) to stop the running proccess -- might work but some processes can hide
or only run at startup.
For these you need "startup" editor or "hijack this". There in lies the catch you need to down load these programs. You
might be able to get some from a magazine cover discs or if you have a cd with Mozilla or Netscape Naviagator lying around try load that and using
it to download.
"Hijack this" produces a lot of output it can take a bit of experience to make sense of it -- ideally it should be run when the operating
system is installed then again before and after each new bit of software is added.
Of course the usual caveats about turning off the system restore on any version of Windows later than 98se apply..
If worst comes to worst U2U me and I will stick the better anti-malware programmes on a CDR and post them to you.
