Evening all,

i am having some problems transferring files. I have a Tb external drive that i am storing movies on but every time i go to transfer a file i get a blue screen of death, says its dumping to a cashe and then comp restarts saying that its shut down due to a critical error.

it never used to do this, i have transferred files up to 10gb and its worked fine,

any ideas?

Which operating system are you using? What make of external drive is it? What has changed since the last time it worked?

Changed: Nothing as far as i know, it hasn't been on for a few weeks but thats about it

Also to note, i have a protable HD that is 18 gb and i have no problem with that at all

Have you scanned the hard disk for errors? (and fixed them)

Ah... Is it a USB connection to the drive by any chance? If so, something as simple as plugging it into a different USB port can fix this problem. You could also update all the drivers for the motherboard, USB controllers etc. Also, as absurd as it may seem, reinstalling the latest video drivers (especially nVidia) can sometimes help. Doing these fixed this problem on my machine (AMD x6, Win 7 64bit, Iomega external USB 1TB drive).

Do a Google search for 'external hard drive windows 7 bsod' and you'll find loads of other people who have had the same problem.

You could also try taking a look at the Windows 7 reliability monitor. Click on the 'Start' logo thingy, and start typing 'reliability'. This should let you open the reliabilty monitor which will show any problems Windows has detected, and let you check for applicable updates and fixes.

Somewhere in control panel is an option to disable the automatic restart on system failure. That gives you time to read the BSOD error message which can be quite informative and help you nail down the problem.

Remove the USB drivers n reinstall em.
