have you plugged in an external hdd, a usb memory stick, a cd or a floppy disk since you last started it?
No nothing was changed or used from when the PC was switched off to now, and i can not accsess safe mode
so im on the laptop next to it, trying to get it workng
steve
Sounds like an HD fault first make you don't have CD or USB stick plugged in if no then open the case and check the drive's cables are
firmly plugged in.
Beyon that the next stage is boot into bios screen and check the drive is recognised.
If the bios won't recognise the HD hardware the hard drive or just possibly motherboard is knacked
If it is recognised it could be either an HD or operating system,
Next stage is boot from a boot cd and check the HD.

steve, if you remember me mentioning, i'm a bit of a computer nerd...
maybe i could have a look for you....
what version of windows was it?
It was XP, but nothing at the moment !!
Go into bios and set your cd drive as boot then shut down and boot from your windows xp cd at the press any key screen. Log onto your xp installation usually number 1 and enter, then type your password if you use one or just enter key, When you get a c: type chkdsk/p and let it run. After this finishes at the c: type fixboot and press enter when it asks if you are sure you want to write a new boot sector. When it finishes type exit at your c: prompt and it should reboot into windows from your HDD if you removed the cd. I have this written down in my notebook so it must have worked for me at some time
How bizarre, I had that on friday, left pc copying files came back to a black screen. Rebooting gave the unmountable error. Had to rebuild XP on a new hard drive. Running a chkdsk on the old one showed quite a few errors but have managed to recover most of my files off it
Sounds like my laptop problem as well I don't suppose you had both just upgraded to avg 2011???
