These new tablet things - ipad, android tablets etc.

Daft question: are they more like computers or can you use them to make phone calls and text like a phone?

cheers

Depens which one, some can be used as phones/text as the function is already built in and others or more like computers. The ipad is pretty good but doesn't as standard support flash but has good apps and other video support and is pretty good for browsing. The galaxy isn't as big and the screens not as good but its a phone and supports flash so some will find that better. Loads of others are coming out and I'm sure that theres going to be a good battle of the next year of price and features.

cheers Pete

I had to change to the android tablet, just to reply.
Handy mini browser, few games.
Not bad, but not a pc replacement.
Could happily use as a travel device though.
This one is an Eken M002
85 quid.

Nope, sod all use for that.

7" screen, so a bit large for the pocket too.

Ok - reason for asking - my old mum is struggling with her eyesight a bit and has difficulty seeing the small text on standard phones but she loves texting family and friends and I was wondering if a small tablet could be the answer

Yes it could - both iPad and Galaxy Tab can both be used for SMS...or even for Voice calls if necessary...

And they're so easy to use my 3 year old nabs my phone (Galaxy S) and starts navigating the games/applications the moment I walk in the door...

Correct in that they're a bit on the large side - the iPad more than the Galaxy...

Have a look at the Dell Streak. Small for a tablet, big for a phone. I love mine
