Dell have some fantastic offers, but youre better off getting it online.

Sadly you've just missed an excellent deal at Homebase, they had a pretty good spec MSI laptop with a bluray drive for £260.

If you have to stick to shops, then these might be of use:

Sainsburys E-Machines E372Z £299.99

Argos Samsung E452 £349.99

Both very similar spec, the E-Machines has a smaller hard drive, but slightly faster CPU than the Samsung. The Samsung is more expensive, but you are buying a decent branded machine.

I just got a Dell M510R for 300 quid from Tesco. Nice

RichardK - 19/2/11 at 10:29 AM

I got my daughter one of these and she loves it,

Its an HP Pavilion DV6 if you see anywhere. Linky

Cheers

Rich

Get a Dell for that money..... Buy from their website direct...

britishtrident - 19/2/11 at 10:40 AM

Morrisons supermarket £289 Acer -- job done

If you want to spend more Toshiba is the best HP are also very good but come with too much unwanted software pre-installed.
Give Dell wide berth, and it goes without saying to avoid Packard-Bell.
Surprising Sony laptops have a history of problems

Alternatively just buy a £200 Netbook and an external DVD drive.

I found that tesco did a really good deal on Dell, cheaper than Dell website.

mrwibble - 19/2/11 at 11:47 AM

i wouldn't buy any computer from curry's pc world etc. over priced rubbish, terrible customer service, and poor knowledge imo.

online - ebuyer.co.uk , my girlfriend recently had a acer laptop and is very pleased with it.

dell would also be reliable.

Damn you beat me to it!

You may be able to reload windows etc. There should be a method of re-installing to factory default.

Is it dead cos something has failed, or just the software messed up causing it not to run.

More details please.

dont think you can class any computer by their manafactuer unless you are talking about customer service.

the internals will mostly be engineered by completely different companies than the one sticking a stamp of its brand on the outside, and will be different through out the range.

if you don't know that much about computers and what all the jargon means, i suggest you google ebuyer put your budget into the search criteria and take a look at the specs of the computers around that price list. i've had dell computers for a long time, modified them and cleaned them when ness 1 has lasted me 12 years and is now used at work after i built my own, but my father in law who works as a software designer recommended acer to my partner.

I've rescued a few Acers for nephews after they have managed to totally stuff them. They seem relatively stable after restarting and they haven't managed to do it again yet whatever they did.

Packard-Bell are not refered to by the trade as Packard-hell without reason.

Laptops & Notebooks vary more between brands than desktops, for example I have seen a good few very expensive Sony laptops scrapped early because of a motherboard fault.

eddie99 - 19/2/11 at 03:14 PM

Why are you against buying online?? I would say you're missing the best deals by cutting the online stuff out....

JoelP - 19/2/11 at 03:31 PM

keep an eye on HUKD to see if anything comes up:

stevebubs - 19/2/11 at 04:09 PM

Dell 15R with i3 370 would be my recommendation.

If you go through quidco, you'll get quite a lot of cash back, too....

stevebubs - 19/2/11 at 04:11 PM

10% Dell discount code: DZ1KJ2MJTC402S

i dont think sony even make desktops, all i'm saying is buying by the brands inside the machine is probalbly a more reliable way of going about it. i also wouldn't buy an electrical brand such as sony instead i'd look to someone with a rep for good quality computer components. at the end of the day all these products go wrong from time to time, particularly a complicated electrical item that is hauled around in a bag and used by teenage children. personally i'd feel happy with dell or acer and both are good value. but i don't know what their aftersales service is like. l
