not the cute furry things but the one that plugs into your compo,mine is dead/dying so i though i really should invest in a new one.
what type should i get,nothing too fancy,optical or ball,cordless or corded,any names to recommend or avoid?

Make sure it is cordless.

If its the old type of mouse with the ball in the bottom it may just need a clean up
To put you on until you get anothe, cordless are good until your batteries die and you haven't any spares

I like Logitech track-balls (I get RSI from ordinary mice) - it doesn't matter if they've got a cord attached as they stay where they're put!

Logitech MX518 gets my vote, even bought one for my work pc too

I like the Logitech laser cordless ones. Have one on every PC but in the "rechargeable" form...at night you just stick it back in the "dock" and it'll never need batteries again...my current one is about 5 years old and still going strong.

Similar spec is getting expensive now (think I only paid £30ish for my current one) but this looks promising

I got a wireless one, for spare batteries what I have is 2 pound shop AAA's (with a pound shop usb charger) and a pair of good batteries for the 2.5 hours when the cheap ones need charging. They last a good few weeks like that and so far this year batteries have cost me about £4
