OK the kids got new laptops from santa and they need to copy music/files etc from the old to the new. Now I know about memory stick/email etc BUt it must be possible to connect them using usb or rj cables surely.
Anyone got a link or details on how a numpty might do this??

you could share them across the network, wirelessly depending on the two operating systems.

Google it.

if you're lucky one of the laptops has a autocrossing rj port (just plug in any rj cable then), if not you need a crossover cable like here: crossover

depending on windows versions, you need to configure the network yourself.

usb pc2pc cables also exist, but quite pricey for a one time use

wireless is also possible, but then you need to setup a ad-hoc network, but both need to have wireless off course

i'd go for a usb HD, also usefull afterwards

One system windows seven one vista
other set up is one xp one windows seven

Have done this myself with a network cable,on the windows 7 computer type in the search box (in the window where you shut down) data transfer and it will tell you what to do and help you install a programme on the old computer to transfer,then it's all automatic.

Cheers I'll try that. Do i still need a crossover cable though? Don't know if the computer has the facility to do this listed earlier.

I just used a yellow modem cable (sorry don't know the propper name) worked fine.

can be a bit slow if theres lots to do, but it works!

Microsoft provide a utility to do this. Available on both xp and vista to transfer over to windows 7 machine.

It takes all user settings and files for the user accounts you select and packages it all up for you to put on USB or DVD or tranfer via cable.

Then in windows 7 accessories > system tool > easy transfer wizard you can unpack it

Download the latest version for each OS rather than use he built in version.

If you've got Wireless internet at home, you should have a router with at least 4 ports fitted. Plug both laptops in there and use the Windows 7 Files and Settings transfer wizard to do it all for you.
If you haven't got the router with network cables, but have a USB hard drive, plug that in and run the same wizard on Windows 7 and it'll tell you how to do it.
