defraging a works pc
steve m - 30/12/11 at 09:38 PM

is there a way of defraging my works pc ?

I have deleted most of the crap stuff on the c drive, but the whole system is still very slow

we are using an XP variation, and under the accessories/system tools etc there is no link to a defrag

is there another way of doing it?

Steve

Download mydefrag. It's alot better than the xp one.

Been a while so maybe wrong but try opening the "run command" (from the start menu or press win+R), then type "dfrg.msc "

Can you search the system for defrag?

Failing that ask your IT guy

A works PC should hopefully be using the NTFS rather than FAT filesystems so defragging probably won't help that much.

Probably running slow due to something that's been installed by the system admin (there must be one in the company if you aren't an administrator).

But start by telling the admin it's running slow and insist he investigates in case it's a virus/keylogger.

If he can't be bothered I've started adding up my waiting times in the past (system boot in the morning, through to shutdown in the evening) It's amazing how telling the boss that you've spent 5 hours in the last week waiting for the PC to do something gets an upgrade or a high priority admin ticket raised. 30minute boots, 30 second app startups soon add up.

Thanks for the replies

I work for a large company, were ALL of the IT staff are non english, and just trying to explain a fault results in hassle

And as iank says, it can take up to 20 mins to actually start work from start up, ive complained, emailed, etc but no oneis interested
and last year, in an email i thanked the management for giving me an extra 80 hours holiday per year (i work 160 days a year, as 4 on 4 off, but not taking leave into the equasion) thats 30 mins per day of wasted productivity

The weird thing is, that on the office laptop, it only takes 5mins max to sign into the same applications
