Real newbie question...

Just got broadband and looking to download some music. Any suggestions for good sites. Also is there any charge? Call me suspicious but seems too good to be true to be able to get tracks for free.

Cheers....

i stopped doing this a while ago, but yes, there are many different sites that you can get free music from. most of the free ones are sites where you share tracks with other users. these sometimes, in my experience, arent very good quality tracks. i stopped using kazaa cos the tracks all came down jumbled. there was a thread recently where sites were discussed.

radio 1 also operate a download service i believe, for a small fee.

off to find that old thread anyway.

e-mule is said to be usefull for that sort of thing.....
All the files have a digital signature embedded in them, so no matter the file name, the system recognises all the identical files and brings in chunks from all the different sources.
Allegedly.

Apparently:

http://www.torrentazos.com
is very, very good. Good quality albums complete with covers. But I wouldn't know...

http://www.suprnova.org - not .com
is also good.

Sometimes the dreaded PRON pops up - but not if you use firefox allegedly.

It is a Spanish site from what I can see - but I guess it works. Maybe...

NAPSTER is good also and now legal - so I guess it is a pay site now.

Remember to arm yourself with as much up to date VIRUS software and firewall capabilities as possible to prevent (not stop) hackers and the like.

Virus checkers only protect from viruses. Firewalls protect from hackers, although 99% of the 'firewalls' you can install on Windows are a waste of time. If you're using broadband, do yourself a favour and get a router. By the nature of the way they function (a trick called network address translation, or NAT) they will provide all the firewall security you need.

Got a BT wireless router and hopefully locked it against outside use. Thanks for the tips.
