As per title, computa is dell laptop.
Seems that win7 can be installed on vista leaving existing programs and data intact but is it that simples?
If win7 install goes bad, can you uninstall to to back to vista?
Finally can same win7 code be used to install on more than one puter that are offline. will there be any prob once connected to internet?
Win 7 can be installed over Vista, but I believe even Microsoft recommend a clean install if at all possible. That's only data though, I
didn't think your programs would survive intact either way?
There is no downgrade path, you'd have to wipe and reinstall Vista. I'd really recommend leaving this as the absolute last resort though, 7
is leaps and bounds ahead of Vista in terms of usability.
From memory, Win 7 requires an internet connection for activation. If you don't connect, you'll get a regular warning saying it's not
valid, then eventually it will prevent you from logging in. I think it's 30 days until you start getting the invalid warning, then 3 months
before it locks completely.
Of course, strictly speaking if you're looking at reusing the key then you're in breach of licence conditions anyway, if you are happy to do
that then just find a pre-activated copy to download. Either way you're doing something dodgy.
When I upgraded a 5 year old windows XP laptop to XP to Windows 7 I bought a copy off e-bay from a supplier that was surprisingly local to where I
live. Cost £36 for 7 Professional with all the recent updates.
Was a bit sceptical about it being legal but once installed I checked with the Microsoft Genuine site and it came back fine.
12 months later still OK with no licencing issues.
Since the seller provided a clean Windows 7 copy with none of the usual bloatware the laptop absolutely flies. The only driver I had to update was the
video one which although it was performing fine it came back as a low performance index. With the correct N Videa one installed the performance figure
was much better.
Absolutely no regrets doing it this way.
