You know how Microsoft do a good version of windows followed by a right minger. IE win 98 good, ME bad (big time), XP good, Vista (bad), Windows7
(good), Windows 8(bad).
If they skip windows 9 and go straight to windows 10 as threatened does that mean it's going to be shite too?

Very simple to make Win8.1 look like Win7. Also if you install 'classic shell' you get the start menu back as well.

Win8.1 in non-metro mode is quicker and more stable that Win7 so worth sticking with 8.1 and making it boot to desktop with the classic shell start
menu.
1. After booting Windows 8.1 click the Desktop tile to enter Desktop mode.
2. Right-click any open area in the taskbar, then click Properties.
3. Click the Navigation tab, then check the box next to Go to the desktop instead of Start when I sign in.
4. Click OK, then reboot. Windows should put you right into Desktop.

I actually have very few complaints about 8.1 which runs on my laptop - have 7 on my desktop.
The main very big complaint is that very few of my favourite old games will load and run on 8.1 even in emulation mode whilst most run on 7.
Microsoft should refund one on their games that no longer run on their new platforms although i supposae I could always set up a partition with XP and
boot to that for gaming.

I've not found any issues with Win8.1 with games, quite the reverse. How old are the games? If they where designed for XP that was over 10 years ago, a lifetime in computing terms.
