Hi All,

My HP work laptop seems to have a thing about "upgrading" from Windows 7 Professional to Windows 10. It came with Windows 7 Professional installed and works just fine as it is, I have no desire to change it to Windows 10 and would like it to stop prompting me to do so.

So...question for the computer literate...how do I disable the Windows 10 prompt without messing anythings else up?

Microsoft Office, Outlook, networking all work fine as it is and I don't want to cause any issues.

An explanation in simple easy to follow steps would benefit me as would screen shots if required.

My laptop kept doing that for weeks (if not months). Every time I switched it on the same pop-up would come up but I just closed it each time....then last week the same pop-up had a new button that said something like 'do not remind me again' which I ticked and now its stopped asking

I have no idea why they new button appeared and even less idea of how but it seems to have sorted the problem out. Sorry not much help to you other than maybe eventually yours will also learn!

My main dislike is the task bar icon, which if clicked I'm sure will start an unwanted process

I believe the reminder came as part of a Microsoft patch, so if you remove the patch you should get rid of it entirely. Well, unless Microsoft then reinstall the patch...

I have used this tool on a few old laptops, it has worked fine and stopped and kept the prompts away.

Ive recently tried the KB303xxxx patch removal to take it away which most sites seem to offer as a solution. So far this leads to an expornanat boot time and the patch comes back a few days later so I gave up!

On the right hand side of the task bar, click the 'up' arrow and show hidden icons. Click customise, scroll to gwx and choose 'Hide icon and notifications. It will still be there but out of sight. I'm on windows 7 pro. There is a pic in my archive.

As others have reported, it came with a 'helpful' update to Windows (KB3035583 )

If you go to 'Add Remove Programs' (type appwiz.cpl into the search box to impress the easily impressed)
Click 'Installed updates'
Find KB3035583 (use the search box in the top right)
Uninstall it and reboot.
Gonzo.

Until Windows Update automatically reinstalls it (if your computer is set to do that).
The article describes how to permanently stop it from coming back if you persevere.

Tried this - found the "GWX" icon and set it to "hide icon and notification". Will see tomorrow am on startup if it works (fingers crossed).

Quick update - hiding the Win10 icon seems to still be working - it's not asking me anymore and I can't see the icon on my task bar either.

The other thing to do if it starts to come back again is to just 'hibernate' your laptop at the end of the day rather than do a full shut down. The Windows 10 reminder tends to come up with a full reboot (at least on my laptop). Starting from hibernate is also a lot quicker than doing a full boot, which is now really slow on my laptop no doubt due to all the extra junk that Microsoft have installed on it over the 3 years that I've had it.
