transfering data to new compo

Got a new compo on the way and i want to transfer all my stuff onto it,going from XP to windoze 8.1.
there are around 500 photos,100 music singles and all my settings,faves etc.
would a 32 gig pen drive be man enough for the job or is there a better way.
i dont have a clue what goes on insides these machines so please dont be too technical

Most computers support at least two sata drives.

Remove hd from old pc and plug into new, then copy.

Else go on ebay, sata hd usb conndcter, allows old hd to connect to new computa via usb but hd needs to be 5v only, some hd need both 5 anf 12v.

Or set up a local network and connect both computers, then copy.

Your suggestion of copying to intermediate usb memory is slowest, and 32 gb may be too small but you can do it in several passes so yes, it can be done.

if i take the HD from the old one,is there wiring in the new case to plug into ?,i have noticed spare connectors on the loom of one i broke up for the case.

Assuming we are talking sata.

There are two separate connectors, one for power that will be daisy chained on one set of wires anf youll need a thinner sata data cable, this may not be in the bew computer but there should be one in the old one,

Note the is likely to be a 4 pin power connector, forget its name that can be used to power the hd using suitable dapter.

Note some computers need change is set up to recognise the additional sata disk. Id like to think newish computerd can figure it out without going in to the set up.

Assuming you have wifi access (or even wired access for two computers) it would be easiest/fastest to transfer the stuff via network. That will also mean you won't have to open things up.

There are lots of tutorials on how to share drives and then copy the files.

i have an rs 232 cable that is for transfer but only 1 monitor,that be ok ?.

I would be amazed/concerned if your new PC still had an RS232 port!! And if it did, the USB stick would be quicker!

Connecting them to a network only needs one to be connected to a monitor at any one time.

looks like i have managed to transfer all the data and settings onto my pen drive,trouble is,XP went on there as well,is there an option to delete XP when i slide the pen into my new compo,close my eyes,cross my fingers and push the button ?.
