DVD 'backups'
Mark Allanson - 10/3/05 at 09:50 PM

Just bought a DVD burner, and already had a DVD drive, what is the easiest software to use to make backups of my favorite films?

You can use the software that came with the drive to copy it back once the copyright is cracked.

Is it a dual layer drive? if so what make?

I only ask as I have just succesfully 'flashed' a sony DVD single layer writer with the bios for a Liteon Dual layer... hey presto one free upgrade to dual layer.

I know it sounds like crap but do a quick search - Liteon make the sony drives but load an inferior bios

Anyway the point is that you can retain the disk capacity of the original so you don't need to 'shrink' it

Dave the problem is you cant just copy a lot of DVD's (allegedy). They are all encrypted.

DVD shrink lets you decrypt it and shrink it by however much you like from 0% upto about 70%. It also makes he dvd region free...

No need for ripping or owt else bung your dvd in, bung in a blank press copy, job done.Any DVD deregions it and strips the encryption, clone does the copying.

Have you looked at the cost of branded dual layer media?

forget buying a blank DL and backing up your original - just add a couple of quid and buy another original!

The price will (has) dropped but it aint come down enough yet to make it an option imho.

Cheers

I agree I bought a lite on dual layer burner but the cost of the blanks is a joke.
