I've bought some web space, but I'm having trouble with loading up some basic pages to it.
I'm calling my main page index.html and placing it where I should, but it's still invisble on t'internet. I keep getting a 404 message.
Any takers ?

Check on the FAQ on your hosts page for what to call your main page. Mine was index.htm.

Also remember theres *.htm and *.html. Make sure all your links are the right one other wise nothing will work. (I had that trouble)

Have you tried naming it .htm instead of .html or default.htm/.html if its a microsoft based server perhaps..

Do you need to run any program/command to set the permissions on the file to make it world readable or do i sound like gobble dee goop?

If its FTP based have you checked that its under the HTML / public directory. I once unloaded a site into the email directory with simular results.

Only did it the once and I was v tired!

Sometimes filenames can be case sensitive too. I had to go through all the links on my site with a fine tooth comb sorting out the capital letters. Up until then I kept getting 404 errors.

I had the same problem as jamjah. i uploaded by FTP but it was not placed into the "public" folder.
as long as it is called index it should not matter if it is htm or html as the will both be recognised.

Delete any files in the html directory that are named default.htm default.html, index.html, index.htm before you upload your index.htm, even then it could take a while to appear.

Also flush your browesers cache and delete any temporary internet files.

If there is a directory called public_html or httpdocs then that's where you'll need to upload the files.

Try the following names:

index.html
index.htm
default.html
default.htm

All in lower case!

It just started working - didn't change anything.

Whatever - it works
Not revealing the URL yet, but it isn't terribly difficult to work out

The index is working, but none of the other pages are.

You need to save the pages as .htm or .html zilspeed. It doesn't seem to have them on the pages. Also some browsers dont like spaces in names.

Derr. I am so thick. If its a new domain or you have transfered a domain then it can take 76 hours for your details to be passed on to all the servery things round the world. bout hte only thing i can think of now.

as for the file names check that they all link to the correct files on the server. if in doubt right click, properties and copy and paste the url.
