RunDLL error
phelpsa - 22/4/05 at 04:18 PM

A little while back, before I got Firefox, I got bombarded with spyware. Ever since its come up with an error at startup saying:

quote:
RUNDLL

Error loading Crogram FilesWeb Specialswebspec.dll

The specified module could not be found.

How can I get rid of this??

That file is from WebSpecials Spyware.
I am imagining that whoever you got Firefox from bundles spyware with it to earn a few bob.
Basically the file is not needed.
The best thing for you to do is to run any decent adware or spyware scanners. Google List here

go into your startup sequence and delete the entry

go to run/msconfig and uncheck the box in selective startup... should cure it. Failing that a registry edit may be called for... discuss later if the previous doesn't work. HTH

Ok, I removed it from my startup, then I searched the registry for webspec, and deleted the Web Specials folder. Thanks for your help Hellfire

I you run xp and have system restore active it could reinstall itself. I've just been helping a mate with ME who has the same trouble. Disable restore then get rid of it with adaware or something and do a restart with restore still disabled, then re-enable it. The spyware he had was coming back till we did this.

The thing is it was giving me this error because it was trying to start up, but the dll wasnt there.

To protect yourself in future get a copy of Hijackthis and run it regularly to check for spyware/trojan modifications to the registry --- however make sure it is the real "Highjackthis" not a blackmail payware trojan program which tries to pass itself off as the real deal. Although it is a good "get me out of jail free card" best practice is to install highjack this on a fesh install of windows and rfun it regularly.

The Castlecops (formerly Computercops.biz) web site is a reliable source for this and other security software see http://castlecops.com/downloads-file-328-details-HiJackThis.html

Another good place to get Highjackthis from is from the writers website here:

http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/

Also got all of his other handy little programs like cool web search shredder etc.
